Section 26 - Andalusia

Puerto Moral - Nerva - 34Km

During this section, EuroVelo 1 takes us on a 34 km journey between Puerto Moral and Nerva, starting from the last pastures of the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park and the mining region of Ríotinto, always within the province of Huelva.

Aracena, the heart of the Natural Park, is located a few kilometres from Puerto Moral and deserves a detour to see some of its attractions or to tune up our bicycles in one of its workshops.

The Gruta de las Maravillas, the Ham Museum or its castle are some of the essential visits in our journey through the capital of the Sierra de Aracena. Linares de la Sierra, a small town a few kilometres from Aracena and its mountain architecture, also deserve some time from our visit.

From Puerto Moral, EuroVelo 1 takes us to Valdezufre by the HV–3102, anasphalted road, ideal for the practice of the cycling tourism.  It is surrounded by meadows with centennial cork oaks and oaks of great size. From there, we take the N–630 to Higuera de la Sierra, a town that notably exemplifies the culture of water in these mountains through a good number of examples of public laundries, fountains and other hydraulic devices. One example, the Paraje de las Tobas, on the outskirts of the town, deserves special mention.

The Museum of the Cabalgata de Reyes Magos, which tells us about one of the most famous parades in Spain, is another point of interest to visit in Higuera de la Sierra.

Before continuing, we can take a detour and cycle to the town of Zufre, as it is not far away, and visit its historic quarter which has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest.

Following the EuroVelo 1, we enter the Riotinto Mining Region, starting with the town of Granada de Riotinto. This takes us to a Martian landscape that is expressed with the Peña del Hierro, the Natural Monument of Montera de Goosan or the Birth of the Riotinto, all elements that form part of the Río Tinto Protected Landscape and the mining history of these lands.

After the visit, EuroVelo 1 arrives at Nerva, an important mining town in the Andévalo region of Huelva, the last stage in this section, where we find all the necessary services to refresh ourselves and rest before continuing our journey.

Points of Interest

Heritage: 9
  • In our pedalling, already very close to the town of Nerva, we find the Peña del Hierro Interpretation Center, within the Riotinto Mining Park and located in the heart of the Río Tinto Protected Landscape.
From the Peña del Hierro Interpretation Centre and accompanied by specialized guides, we can enter an authentic 200 m long mine gallery as well as visit the location where the CAB and the NASA are carrying out their research for the Mars Project and also discover the source of the famous Río Tinto.

  • The Vázquez Díaz Museum, also known as the Daniel Vázquez Díaz Center for Modern and Contemporary Art, is one of the most important exhibition centers in the province of Huelva. In a modern building, where the brick and copper go together, it has more than 1,000 square meters dedicated to the exhibition of works of modern art (Daniel Vázquez Díaz and José Mª labrador) and contemporary art (painting of the 80's of the 20th century).

  • If we deviate about ten kilometres from Higuera de la Sierra, we reach the beautiful town of Zufre. Also located within the the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park, it has a historical centre catalogued as a Cultural Interest Site (BIC), as well as the Church of Santa María, the Hermitage of Santa Zita, the Humilladero de San Sebastián and the beautiful Town Hall. From its square, there is a splendid panoramic view of the Zufre Reservoir.

  • A few kilometres from Puerto Moral, EuroVelo 1 takes us to the town of Higuera de la Sierra, famous for the celebrations that takes place every 5th of January in its crowded streets.
In this centre we see the history and evolution of the Cabalgata de Reyes Magos (Three Kings' Parade), one of the most admired and widely known parades in Spain.

  • A few kilometres from Aracena, we find the town of Linares de la Sierra, hidden in a fresh cool lush valley also located within the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park.
Here we find one of the best examples of mountain architecture, declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC), with its cobbled streets, the Parish Church of San Juan Bautista, the public laundry and its huddled houses, making this nucleus a place of great attraction and beauty.

  • We find this open–air museum near to the Gruta de Las Maravillas.
Currently, the museum includes around fifty sculptures by leading Spanish authors, located around the  Plaza de San Pedro, the Gruta de las Maravillas, the Avenida de Huelva, Gran Vía and Plaza de Santa Lucía.

  • In the town of Aracena in Huelva, the heart of Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park, the Iberian Ham Museum of Aracena is designed to disseminate this ancient mountain culture passed down from parents to children.
Visitors will learn about the breeding process, the pig's life in the open mountain pastures, its diet, traditional and industrial methods of slaughter, the curing and production process, as well as the aging process in the cellars.

  • At the top of Aracena, we find its castle, an excellent viewing point as well as a place to visit in its own right.
In medieval times it was a fortified town, defended by a protective wall  and  fortress. Archaeological remains from the 10th to 13th centuries have been found on this site. This indicates an Andalusian population related to the Qatrasana settlement documented in Islamic texts.

  • From Puerto Moral, taking small local roads ideal for cycle tourism (HV–3105), we can detour to Aracena, a town of reference within the  Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park.
There we find, among other attractions, the Gruta de las Maravillas, an exceptional collection of galleries, halls, lakes and underground canals that time and water have carved into the heart of Cerro del Castillo.

Nature: 3
  • The Montera de Gossan Natural Monument is located in the interior of the Rio Tinto Protected Landscape and is partially included in the Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) and Historical Site of the Riotinto–Nerva Mining Zone. It is located in the Peña de Hierro mine in Nerva, one of the many opencast mines in the Andévalo region of Huelva and the surrounding area of Minas de Riotinto.

  • The Río Tinto Protected Landscape, which includes the upper and middle sections of the river, is unique in the world, both for its chromatic beauty and its exceptional environmental and historical conditions. Around the upper course is the largest opencast mining site in Europe, which was already exploited by Tartessians and Romans.

  • Leaving Higuera de la Sierra and taking the old road to Zufre, we find Las Tobas, where the flow of water has drawn beautiful watercourses, creating small caves and holes; there are several figures of the Virgin that appear to sanctify the place, complimenting its magical secular character. Las Tobas constitutes a privileged combination of vegetation and rock, as well as a viewing point for exceptional panoramas.

Gastronomy and wine: 1
  • Jabugo is the name registered by the European Union that designates, protects and certifies the quality and origin of hams and shoulders, produced in natural cellars in the villages surrounding the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park, from 100% Iberian pigs reared and fattened in the open range.
